In May 1850, Philo, Thankful (Hattie) and son, Jay, moved with his in-laws from Orleans County NY to Dane County WI, where his brother-in-law, Jesse Stevens had previously settled. By May 1876, he was separated from his wife and family and had moved to Cedar Falls IA, where he brother Orville resided. While there he remarried, twice. On one occasion he took his pistol, saying "will go out to the grove and shoot quail or prairie chicken" and later he was found shot dead, no one ever knowing of how it happened.
