Clyde Donavan was leading the race in a Studebaker machine. Suddenly on the back stretch he swerved the car to keep from running down a child. The rear axle snapped and Donavan steered the car into a fence.
The car struck a heavy post, tore down a large section of fence, hurling scores of spectators to the ground, then vaulting through the air, landing a good way down the track in a mass of wreckage. Billy Sherrod and his mechanic, Gooch Brown, along with John sherril and Thomas Porter Bridges, all plowed into the wreck and were fatally injured.
