Her son, Miguel was in San Francisco getting supplies and while staying in a local hotel contacted Black Smallpox while sharing a room with a seaman. Miguel became very ill and his father rushed to the hospital in San Francisco. He refused to leave him and he too became ill with the smallpox. They died 16 days apart. Juanita lived only three more years and it is said she died of a broken heart. She is buried in Los Banos.
