The Abrells' gravestone is a poignant reminder that great as the widowed Ann Abrell's grief must have been, such losses were not uncommon in past eras, when only half of all the children born survived to adulthood, and a man of forty was not considered "young". Made of brown sandstone,
it features a square-jawed, prominent-chinned soul effigy in its tympanum, and appears to be the work of noted Manhattan carver John Zuricher.
