Jacob Kermit Bakke, 77, Fargo, ND, formerly of Prosper, ND, passed away on the morning of Saturday, March 13, 2010, after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on May 30, 1932, in Northwood, N.D. to Kermit and Helen (Holweger) Bakke. He attended rural school and then graduated from Northwood High school in 1950. Jacob was active in 4-H during these years, and was elected as an Outstanding 4-H Member of Grand Forks County, earning him a gold watch and a trip to the Chicago 4-H Convention.
Jacob farmed with his dad for a few years, and then, on September 14, 1952, he married Arlene Johnson of McCanna, N.D. at the Elk Valley Lutheran Church. In August of 1957, he began working for Peavey Elevator Grain Company in Merrifield, N.D. He soon became manager, working seven years at this elevator and then fulfilled positions in Cleveland, N.D., Christine, N.D., and then Osnabrock, N.D., where he managed the Farmer's Co-op for seven years as well. Jacob also completed a course in the Dale Carnegie program. The rest of Jacob's career was spent in Prosper, N.D., where he managed the elevator for 27 years, retiring in 1994. He and Arlene then built a home in Fargo, N.D., where he spent his remaining years.
Jacob belonged to several clubs, including the Elks, Eagles, Sons of Norway, Masons, and the Mobile Nobles, in which he served as president for a period of time, and enjoyed driving the small cars in many parades with his companions in this Shrine unit. Jacob also served as past president of the Red River Valley Fair Association in which he volunteered many years and was a long time member of Olivet Lutheran Church of Fargo.
Jacob had numerous hobbies, including raising Suffolk sheep while living in Prosper, in which he took pride in showing the sheep at the Valley City Winter shows, as well as the Red River Valley Fair. He received many ribbons, including champion honor. He thoroughly enjoyed bowling with friends, as well as golfing, particularly enjoying his hole-in-one. Jake and Arlene spent several winters traveling to Mesa, Arizona, enjoying the reprieve from the long winter months.
Jacob was a devoted husband and father, as well as grandfather and great grandfather, with both he and Arlene always supportive in their children and grandchildrens' activities. He leaves behind his wife, Arlene, of 57 years, daughter, Linda Miller, Perham, MN, and son, Gregory (Kristine), Bayport, MN; grandchildren, Jessica Miller, Lindsey Arvidson, Caleb, Sophia, and Grace Bakke; and great grandchild, Taya Arvidson; one brother, Kermit (Barbra), as well as nieces and nephews, Bob (Cheryl) Halvorson, Cheryl (Dave) Korsmo, Jackie (Dan) Korsmo, and Lisa (Bruce) Nelson.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Kermit and Helen Bakke, sister, Virginia (Robert) Halvorson , brother, Frederick Bakke, grandparents, Jacob and Geneiva Bakke, and Jacob and Katherine Holeweger.
