He married Sarah Stambaugh and fathered Caroline (b. @1852), then moved to Indiana where Sara died. He returned to Pennsylvania and married Sarah Pye June 18, 1857, at Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and fathered the children you see linked below. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Lower Dickinson Township, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 9" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service with four regiments:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-three in West Chester, Chester County, June 8, 1861, mustered into federal service at Tennallytown, Washington DC, September 5 as private with Co. H, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry), but discharged by surgeon's certificate to date December 2, 1861, at Camp Tennally.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-five in Carlisle July 25, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 15 as a private with Co. C, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded in the right hand at the battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, the bullet striking the back of the hand and passing thorough the palm, fracturing the metacarpal bones of the middle and ring fingers. Hospitalized in Baltimore, Maryland, he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate to date April 10, 1863. His last name is spelled "Nonemaker" on the 130th Pennsylvania company register. Three days after his discharge, he applied for and soon received a disability pension for his wounds.
3. Despite the disability pension, he enlisted at the stated age of thirty-one in Carlisle February 6, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 8 as an unassigned private with the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pennsylvania). On April 1, 1864, due to over recruiting, he was part of an Ulysses S. Grant-ordered mass transfer to the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry, he going to Co. B. He suffered a double hernia during the siege of Cold Harbor in June 1864 but remained on duty and honorably discharged with his company June 15, 1865, at Fortress Monroe, Virginia.
