Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was born in Hillsboro, North Carolina, was appointed to West Point in 1852, he did not graduate but he was directly commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps in 1855. When the War began, he resigned his commission and was appointed Colonel of the 11th North Carolina Volunteers. He fought at Manassas, Battle of Winchester and was wounded three times. He served as chief of staff to General Patrick Cleburne during the Murfreesboro campaign, fought at Gettysburg and was promoted Brigadier General in August, 1863. In 1864, he participated in the fighting at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania before being wounded once again at Cold Harbor. After recovering, he led a brigade in the attack on Fort Harrison in October, 1864, fought at Bentonville and surrendered with General Joseph E. Johnston on April 26, 1865. After the War, he worked in the commission business of Georgia and later moved to New York and worked for the postal service.
