Born to Elijah N and Laura A Moore Abbott in Bells, Cherokee, GA. Native Georgans, his parents married around 1870 and Claude was their second son.
In 1880 he lived in Sixes, Cherokee County, GA. He was attending school along with his 9 year old brother, James. His sisters, Lena (5) and Lilla (3) were too young to attend. In 1900 even though James is 29, Claude is 27, Lena 24, Lila 23, they both have moved to Alabama and all remain at home with the parents in Allen (Calhoun County) AL.

His parents have been married 30 years and have had 7 children, six of which survive. James and Claude are the farmers now, with Walter as a "farm laborer". Ten years later the family is living in on Adams Ferry Road in Greens Schoolhouse, Calhoun, AL. The only two siblings to have left the family fold are Lilla and Wade. In 1918 was a self-employed farmer. According to his draft registration he was tall of medium build with grey eyes and black hair, Caucasian who was a natural born citizen.
