Born to Elijah N and Laura A Moore Abbott in Bells, Cherokee, GA. Native Georgans, his parents married around 1870 and Claude was their second son.

In 1880 he lived in Sixes, Cherokee County, GA. He was attending school along with his 9 year old brother, James. His sisters, Lena (5) and Lilla (3) were too young to attend. His father's occupation is farmer and his mother is at home. In 1900 even though James is 29, Claude is 27, Lena 24, Lila 23, they both have moved to Alabama and all remain at home with the parents in Allen (Calhoun County) AL.
In 1887 the whole family moves to Alabama. Wade is the last child born in Georgia (1885) and Walter is the only one to be born in Alabama (1890). His parents have been married 30 years and have had 7 children, six of which survive. James and Claude are the farmers now, with Walter as a "farm laborer". There is no occupation given for his parents or his sisters.

Ten years later the family is living in on Adams Ferry Road in Greens Schoolhouse, Calhoun, AL. The only two siblings to have left the family fold are Lilla and Wade. James, Claude, their father, and now young Walter are all working as general farm labor. His mother nor his sister, Lena, show any occupation.

In 1918 was a self-employed farmer. According to his draft registration he was tall of medium build with grey eyes and black hair, Caucasian who was a natural born citizen.
His nearest living relative was his mother, Laura, with whom he still resided in District 1 Piedmont, Calhoun, AL. His father had died in January. In 1920, James and Claude are still single, still living with and supporting their mother by working as general farm labor.
