Betty was the second of four children born to Harold and Polly (Haddon) Schwartz. She graduated from South Kitsap High School after attending Bremerton schools. Betty married Bernard O'Connell when she was 18; they were divorced and she married Frank Stencil in 1944 and they raised four children together: Richard "Bo", Doug, Dan and Darlene. She later married Evan Reames.

Betty was very artistic and for several years created a line of jewelry, lamps and clocks which Betty hand-sculpted the interior of each and painted flowers and other designs inside.

She later owned an antique shop in Gig Harbor before the little town gained cachet and became popular as a tourist attraction and an enclave for wealthy residents.

Betty died of an aneurysm when she was 65. Her ashes were scattered by family.
