Please be aware that I have been working with staff at Cumberland Gap National Park to identify the location of the cemetery. They provided me with directions and GPS coordinates since it is within the Park. This has been posted on the page for the cemetery. It is not in Bell County, KY but in Lee, VA.

Serelda Denny appears to have Cherokee ancestry (as confirmed by a mitochondrial DNA test of descendants), but also Alsace, Lorraine ancestry and English ancestry. She was beautiful with black hair. She grew up in Tom's Creek Twp, Bell County, KY, not far from Browney's Creek and Yellow Hill, Bell, KY.

Her mother was Elizabeth Susong Denny and father William Denny. Her grandmother was Nancy Tinsley Denny and grandfather Joseph James Denny on the paternal side. On the maternal side, her grandparents were Jacob Susong and Margaret Ball Susong. Both the Balls and the Susongs were revolutionary war families.

Her first child was fathered out of wedlock by Elias Drake Wright.

Elias own father was killed in the civil war. Elizabeth Stepp, Elias' mother, was born in Henderson County, North Carolina. On July 29, 1860, she married Thomas B. Drake. He was killed fighting in the Civil War in Tennessee. Elizabeth had a son, Elias B. Drake in 1862, she married, Columbus Christopher Wright and he adopted Elias.

Elias Drake Wright's and Serelda Denny's child's name was Thomas Denny. Thomas was a very handsome child. He married Martha Catherine Hurst Denny.

Serelda later married James Barnett in Pineville, KY on November 8, 1889 and had 2 daughters.

James Barnett died in 1898. Serelda Barnett continued to farm the land and live with her 2 daughters and son. In 1900, James Barnett's sons James Jr. and Moses (from a prior marriage) lived next door.
