Don grew up in Caruthersville and graduated from Caruthersville High Shool, where he played football and participated in track and basketball. He then went on to graduate from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark., with a bachelor's degree. Don participated in many clubs in college, including being a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity.
Don went to work at Ark-Mo Power, where he eventually retired after 44 years of service. Don was a history buff and a Civil War historian. He and his wife Helen loved to travel. He also loved his coffee time almost every day with his beloved friends. Don was a member of the Kiwanis Club for many years and a member of the Central Church of Christ.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Monroe and Pearl Abernethy; brother, Jack Carroll Abernethy; sister
Faye Merrell; and granddaughters, Ashley Abernethy and Stefany Tillman.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen Abernethy of Caruthersville; children, Ken Abernethy and Paul Abernethy of Kansas City, Mo., Carol Tillman (Mike) Gowan of Hayti, Mickey (Kathy) Malone of Moore, Okla., and Sammy Malone of Dyersburg; grandchildren, Chase (Julie) Abernethy of Hawaii, Kelsey Abernethy of Kansas City and Ginny Tillman of Hayti; sisters, Mary Lynn
Robertson of Memphis, Jean Mouhalis of Hayti and Ann (Lavanda) White of Cape Girardeau; and a host of nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
Visitation was Saturday, April 27, at H.S. Smith Funeral Home in Caruthersville. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 28, at the Central Church of Christ, with Bro. Mike McDaniels officiating. Intermet was in the Pemiscot Memorial Gardens in Caruthersville.
H.S. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
