William Cornelius Daley, 87, beloved husband of Frances LaMock Daley and a resident of Onancock, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox.

Born on Nov. 29, 1920 in Allendale, N.J., he was the son of the late Cornelius F. Daley and Frances Weaver Daley. He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Robert, James and Eugene Daley; and his grandson, Lee Wallace.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Frances; his eight children; thirteen grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Bill, a member of "The Greatest Generation," began his military career in his early 20s, joining the Army Air Corps in 1941. His first duty station was in Alaska, followed by the Allutians and then England in 1944. He was one of the famed "56th Fighter Group" and was awarded the Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. This World War II Ace retired with a rank of Major in 1954.

Following his military service, Major Daley owned and operated a nursery, "Broadleaf Gardens," specializing in azaleas, located just outside of Onancock. Not satisfied to sit back and retire, he was instrumental in founding the local flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Painter, where he served for the next 20 years. An avid sailor, Bill taught navigation, sailing and other boating skills to a multitude of boaters on the Eastern Shore.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Onley for 66 years, the U.S. Power Squadron and the American Nurserymen's Association. He and his loving wife traveled extensively for 30 years after their retirement, boating and RV'ing, visiting all 50 states and several foreign countries.

A funeral mass was conducted at the St. Peter's Catholic Church on Sunday, March 23, at 3 p.m. Interment followed in the Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Onancock with Military Honors.
