Mary Alice, also known as Matie was the eldest child of Abraham Lincoln Spotts and Emma Louise Heinselman. She had two younger sisters and three younger brothers. She was raised in Portland, Cerro Gordo, Iowa until her marriage in 1909 to Jean Feni Sargent. They were married in her home church. Jean and Matie then moved to South Dakota, where she spent the rest of her life. Jean and Matie had five children, Carroll Vessey Sargent (1909-2004), William Boyd Sargent (1911-1983), Robert Lynn Sargent (1913-1985), Lois (1917-2012) and Ardis (1920-2012). The children all went to Gettysburg High School. She was the wife of a Lawyer, and a very popular person in the community. She attended Gettysburg United Methodist Church in Gettysburg, South Dakota. She was a great piano player and played with her children. She was also a great painter. Her husband died in 1954, and she traveled alot, seeing her 11 grandchildren (who currently are all still alive as of 4/23/12) and range in age from 78 to 53 (as of 3/9/13). Her oldest grandson Eugene Adelbert Sargent died in 2014. She died of a heart attack at the dining room table of her son Robert Lynn Sargent, his wife Anne Savage Sargent and 2 year old Granddaughter, Diane Ruth Sargent who at the time were living in Long Beach, California. She was taken back to Gettysburg, South Dakota for final burial, next to her husband.
