Willis was born in Plainfield, NH to George and Samantha (Souther) Cole. He spent his entire life in the Sullivan County, area and was a farmer in Cornish for most of that time. His farm was next door to the Louis St Gaudens studio and home (He was a famous sculptor in the early 1900's). Willis married first Julia (Huggins) Cole who died in 1880. His second wife was Nizaula (Bixby) Cole. Julia and Willis had two children and Nizaula and Willis also had two children. Willis died at Cornish in 1938 and was buried at Plainfield Plain Cemetery in Plainfield, NH.
