Matilda Gould (Age: 15) is initially discovered on the 1851 Census of Canada living at Cramahe, Northumberland, Canada West (now Cramahe, Northumberland County in central Ontario). She is residing in the household of Samuel (age: 25) and Emily (Age: 20) Armstrong, with Moses Armstrong (Age: 14). Samuel Armstrong is listed as a Blk (Black) Smith. Samuel and Emily are married and Moses and Matilda are single.

The entire household is listed as being born in Canada and their religion is given as W. Methodist (Wesleyan Methodist). Moses Armstrong and Matilda Gould are "Not Members" of the household (i.e. they are not children of the married couple, though they may be otherwise related). The group lives together in a 1.5 story, single family, Framed house.

Matilda (Age: 24) and Hiram Palmer (Age: 26) are found living at Cramahe, Northumberland, Canada West at the time of the 1861 Census of Canada. Hiram is working as a Laborer and his birthplace is given as U.S. Matilda's place of birth is shown as U.C. (Upper Canada). Their religion is listed as Baptist. Matilda and Hiram reside in a log house and appear to have no children at this time.

"Mr. [Frederick D.] Palmer was born April 3, 1864, in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin, and is a son of Hiram B. and Matilda (Gould) Palmer, natives of New York state [Note: Census records indicate Matilda (Gould) Palmer was born in Canada]. Mr. Palmer’s parents were married in Canada, and in 1864 settled in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin, where Mrs. Palmer died when our subject was only fourteen months of age. About three years later, Hiram B. Palmer was married to Miss Susannah Butler ..."
