Adolph Stoltenberg, 83 (photo) who operated a general store in the village of Cleveland for nearly 62 years, died today at his home in the village. He had been ill three weeks. Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced Saturday. He started serving the people of Cleveland in 1885 and had remained in the same location all these years. He started at the age of 17 years, being employed by the Koehler store in this city. He moved to Duluth for a time and returned to Cleveland to build and operate his
own store. In 1895 he erected another building and began operation of a funeral service and furniture store in addition to his general store. His holdings were destroyed by fire in 1930 but he rebuilt the store property. He was one of the organizers of the Vogel, Stoltenberg and Vogel Lumber and Coal company in 1911 and was one of the founders of the Cleveland volunteer fire department and also served in the old Rankin Guards here. The positions of postmaster, band director and school board head were also held by him at various times during his business career.
His wife died in 1923. Survivors are a son, Reuben, in business with his father; and two daughters, Mrs. Alma Koehn and Mrs. Clara Lutze,
both of Cleveland. Manitowoc Herald Times, Friday, November 22, 1946 P. 2
