YORKTOWN - I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7) Heaven rejoiced Friday at the homecoming of Bradley Eugene Baldwin, 75, on May 10, 2013 after an extended period of declining health. He was born in Rhodell, WV, but moved to Newport News, VA, after his high school graduation to attend the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company's Apprentice School. An electrician by trade, Bradley rose to the rank of general foreman and retired with 46 years of distinguished service (the last 9 years on disability) in the shipbuilding profession. He worked on numerous nuclear-powered submarines, carriers and cruisers, including the shipyard's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise. He was also certified in radiological monitoring, control and instrumentation. He was an avid gardener, amateur coin collector and antique vehicle enthusiast. Known for his wit, generosity and gentle spirit, he was devoted to his family and was cherished by many lifelong friends. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and became a tireless prayer warrior as his physical strength faded, reading the Bible through in a variety of translations. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mildred F. Baldwin; his children and their spouses, Barbara B. Bowen and her husband, Jerry, Carol B. Bongardt and her husband, James; five grandchildren, Matthew C. Bowen, Jennifer L. Lackey, Gregory M. Bowen, Andrew J. Bongardt and Megan M. Bongardt.; and two great-grandchildren, William Connor Bryant and Carson Hugh Lackey. In addition, he is survived by his brothers, Lindell E. Baldwin of Tampa, Fl., and Michael K. Barley of Carrollton, VA., as well as many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Bethel Baptist Church. Visitation will start at 10 AM. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Please leave condolences at www.wjsmithandsonfh.com. Arrangements by W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home.
