Linda Berman Carter, one of Modesto's first woman police detectives, died Sunday of cancer. She was 48.
Mrs. Carter, described by one colleague as ä hard-working investigator," specialized in juvenile, check-passing and fraud cases.
The native of Weymouth, Mass., went to work for the Modesto Police Department 14 years ago. Sh had been off the job on sick leave since February.
She was a member of the Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society, Operating Engineers Local 3 and the California Check Investigators Association.
Survivors include stepsons Steve Carter of Modesto and John Carter of Sonora; stepdaughter Lynn Carter of Los Angeles; parents Mary Berman of Vermont and Herbert R. Berman of Los Gatos; and four grand-children.
A funeral service with police honor guard will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lakewood Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
The family prefers remembrances to be sent to the American Cancer Society.
