Wayne Mark Beck, 87, of Shelley, Idaho, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013. He was born Jan. 8, 1926 in Labelle, Idaho to Clarence Lee and Elsie Pauline Miller Beck.
Wayne was raised with six brothers and sisters, Merlin, Reva, Ralph, Earl, Clea, and Von in Archer where he also attended school. He built life-long friendships with his peers in Archer and relished telling stories of their exploits growing up.
In Jan. 1944, Wayne enlisted in the U.S. Navy to fight in World War II. After training as a signalman at the Farragut Naval Training Station, he was assigned to a troop transport ship and served in the Pacific theatre until 1946 when he was honorably discharged.
Returning to Archer after the war, Wayne courted Zara Z. Hendricks of Lyman, Idaho. They were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Dec. 16, 1947. They made their home in Archer where Wayne farmed potatoes, wheat, barley, and alfalfa for 44 years. In addition to his occupation, he was active in civic service, including the National Farmers Organization. In 1980 he was elected as commissioner of Madison County, an office he held for 6 years.
After retiring, Wayne and Zara were called to serve in the Oklahoma Tulsa LDS Mission. They were assigned to the Lamar, Missouri Branch, where Wayne served as branch president. During their service, an automobile accident claimed the life of Zara and ended their mission assignment.
On Dec. 9 1995, Wayne married Roxie McMurtrey Cooper in Idaho Falls, Idaho and moved to Shelley, Idaho where they resided in the summers. The couple wintered in St. George, Utah. Wayne enjoyed traveling with Roxie and visited many countries with her. They served as missionaries in Cove Fort, Utah, and twice in Nauvoo, Illinois. They were a continual presence in the lives of their many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Roxie, a sister, Clea Taylor, of Palmdale, California; a brother, Von Beck, of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and his eight children: Carolyn (Doug) Winchester, of Ucon, Idaho; Rodney (Rhonda), of Boise, Idaho; Doyle (Elizabeth), of Idaho Falls; Robert (Peggy), of San Antonio, Texas; Layne (Janet), of Smithfield, Utah; Sharon (Steve) Oakey, of Rexburg, Idaho; Bryant (Nathalie), of Round Rock, Texas; Valynn (Michael) Dismuke, of Sandy, Utah; 33 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Zara, his siblings, Merlin, Reva Young, Ralph, and Earl, and a great grandson, Justin Banda.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 12 p.m. at the Archer/Sunnydell Ward meetinghouse, 201 W. 8000 S. Rexburg, ID. Family will receive friends on Friday, May 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Eckersell Funeral Home in Rigby, Idaho and on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will be at Sutton Cemetery in Archer.
