James Bartlett enlisted in the USMC 76 th Co 6 th Marine Regiment in 1918.

" James's regiment was under the command of General John J. Pershing, and was ordered to assist the French 15th Colonial Division in the Battle of Saint-Mihiel. It was a rainy, wind driven, muddy battle that lasted for several days.

When the battle was over on the third day of fighting, 4,500 US forces had been killed. James's unit took heavy casualties on the first day of the battle, which was 12 September 1918. James was one of the gallant soldiers killed that day in Thiacourt, France."
