Civil War Veteran. Survivor of the Sultana Disaster. Captain, Federal 44th Indiana Colored Infantry Regiment. Captured and was POW at Andersonville.
The Sultana was a Mississippi River side-wheel steamboat. On April 27, 1865, the boat exploded in the greatest maritime disaster in United States history. An estimated 1,800 of her 2,427 passengers died. James Walter Elliott was among the survivors.
He was a lawyer, obtaining his degree from Wabash College.
Marshall County Minister, performed marriages from 1869-1884. First schoolteacher in the area now called Arab.
