Spent Many Years as Cattle Buyer Rites Wednesday
One of the Door County's oldest native-born residents, Joseph Stoneman Sr., 85, died at a Sturgeon Bay hospital Sunday from complications following a fall March 30 in which he broke his hip.
Three priests, the Rev. J. N. Diny of Maplewood, the Rev. Gallagher of Baileys Harbor and the Rev. Charles Kaminsed of Institute, officiated at requiem high mass for the deceased at St. Mary's church at Maplewood Wednesday morning, after the body lain in state in the funeral chapel of one of Mr. Stoneman's sons, John A. Stoneman in Sawyer since being prepared for burial.
Mr. Stoneman was born in Forestville July 8, 1857, when this community was still a wilderness and lived here all his life, principally following the occupation of a live stock buyer. For five years, 1905 to 1910, he operated a general store at Forestville, and 10 years later, he retired.
In 1886, Mr. Stoneman was married to Bridget Mulvihill who died nine years later, and in 1900 married Mrs. Katherine Murray. After the latter's death in 1938, he moved to Sawyer where he resided with his daughter, Mrs. Warner Cornell.
Surviving are two sons of the first marriage John A. and Leo D., both of Sawyer, two sons and a daughter by the second marriage, Leonard and Roy and Mrs. Cornell, also of Sawyer a stepson, Robert Murray of Sturgeon Bay, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Pallbearers at the funeral Wednesday were Garfield Hessel, Geo. Fellows, Fred Ash, Charles Cofrin, Elton Washburn and Arnold Herrboldt, all nephews.
Among those who came from outside for the funeral were . Mrs. Nell Stoneman, Taycheedah Jean and Patsy Stoneman, Mrs. John O'Rourke, Mrs. Mamie Ellser, Mrs. Ray Tesch and Art Brett, Milwaukee Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Hessel and. Mrs. Katherine Stoneman, Francis Creek, the Frey brothers from Marinette, and Mr. and Mrs. John Kuss and Mr. and Mrs. Gus Graf from Algoma.
