Hon. Isaac Davis - His Death at the Age of Eighty-Three Years Ten Months.
Hon. Isaac Davis died at his residence on Elm street, about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon after a very short illness, during which he had not been confined to his bed....
Col. Davis was a native of the neighboring town of Northboro, where he was born June 2d, 1799.
He was the fourth of 11 children of Phinehas and Martha (Eager) Davis, his father being a brother of the late Gov. John Davis of this city, and of the late Hon. Joseph Davis of Northboro.
Col. Davis was a descendant of one of the families which has been prominent in the country from its first settlement.
His grandfather was Dea. Isaac Davis, a grandson of Lieut. Simeon Davis, one of the first settlers of Rutland and Holden, who subsequently removed from Holden to Northboro where he was a deacon of the first church. His (Dea. Isaac's) wife was Anna, daughter of Dr. Samuel Bingham of Marlboro. Of ten children born to them (Dea. Isaac and Anna), Phinehas, the father of Col. Isaac Davis....
He made rapid progress in his early studies and ... was fitted for college at Leicester Academy. He entered Brown University in the fall of 1818 and graduated in 1822 ....
Col. Davis was almost from the first dependent upon his own efforts, his father's means being insufficient to send his boys to college and maintain his large family....
Col. Davis took up his residence in Worcester in December 1822, Worcester then being a town of about 3000 inhabitants.
He pursued his studies in the office of his uncle, John Davis, who was subsequently a representative in congress, governor of this commonwealth, and United States senator.

Col. Davis took an early interest in military matters and performed duty as a private in the North Infantry Company in Worcester from 1822 to 1825, when he was elected lieutenant of the company. He was commissioned Sept. 1, 1825, and was elected captain in 1826. In April, 1827, he was chosen major of the sixth regiment, Massachusetts militia, and was chose colonel of the regiment in 1828, serving till May, 1831. when he resigned as was honorably discharged....
In 1823 Col. Davis volunteered as a private in a fire engine company, of which he rose to be commander....
Col. Davis was married, March 30th 1829, to Mary H., daughter of Hon Joseph Estabrook of Royalston, who died Sep 13th, 1875.
Of their ten children all but one survive:
