Only son and eldest child of Edward Demarse and Florence Davis, Jene was trained as a commercial draftsman. After his schooling he worked in that capacity until the U.S. entered World War II.

He enlisted in the US Army at Kalamazoo in February of 1944, and married his sweetheart Rita Chadonnet six months later. After the war, he returned to the workforce first as a machinist, then as an engineer.

In the early 1950's he briefly moved his family to Orono, Maine where for a time he was an instructor with the state University there.
