Dudley was the only son of Addison Smith and Nancy Fitzgerald Hicks. He was born after his parents moved from Bloomington, Indiana to Shelbyville, Illinois.

During the Civil War, Dudley was a Col in the Union Army, Co. B, 14th Illinois Infantry. On 2 Jan 1885 at the age of 51, Dudley married Bernadine Orme. They had 7 children; 6 girls and one son named Dudley Chase Jr, born in 1896 and who died in 1996 at the age of 100.

This gentleman was a family historian and contributed to the family history document that has tremendously aided other Smith descendants in understanding their heritage.
