Donald was born in Middlefield, CT and came to Great Kills, Staten Island, NY as a child.
Brother of:
Rev. Royal Olson
Gloria Olson Ahlgren
He married Ruth A. Olson in 1962 and resided in
Annadale, S.I. NY.
He served in the U.S. Air force from 1950 to 1953 and played in the Air Force band in Michigan during that time.
Donald retired from the New York City Police Department in November 1980 after 21 years as a police officer. He worked the last 18 years in the 120th Precinct in Pt. Richmond and Mariners Harbor. He was honored by his fellow officers with a retirement party on October 2nd, 1980.
Besides his police work, Don led the Don Richards Orchestra, an 18-piece ensemble, for approximately 10 years. He played the trombone and flute with the Staten Island Musicians Society Band and was active in the worship and music committee of Christ Lutheran Church.
Don was killed in a car crash along with his wife Ruth and their daughter Ruth Anne. The car, driven by their daughter, skidded in the rain across the divider of the West Shore Expressway into the path of a southbound car.
A son, Keven Olson, survived.
It was a family tragedy, losing three members of the family
and a sad event for all who knew them. Don died only 16 days after his retirement from the police force and they had many plans for the future.
They were a close-knit family.
