Ada Zelma Scott Stace wrote a book titled "The Hugh Scott Family in America". In her book were numerous stories about the Scott family. There is not room enough to write on her memorial page everything, but I will add some of her remarks. (This information was given to me by another Scott descendant, Don Yeley, who was the grandson of Ada's sister, Minnie Ruth Scott Yeley)

Our great grandfather and grandmother Scott, Hugh Scott and Sarah McElwee, were married and came to America from Corke, Ireland, near the Scotland line early in the 1800's date unknown. Hugh was born in Ireland in 1775 of what is known as Scottch-Irish Stock. They traveled across the Atlantic by sailing vessels. The Scotts settled first in Pennsylvania with the Deerin family. The Scotts and Deerin families married and inter-married down through the time. After a few years they moved onto Steubenville, Ohio, on the Ohio river.

Whle at this place our grandfather, Thomas, was born about 1804 or 1805. As they moved about and followed the water streams the Scott and Deerin families moved to Noble County, in Ohio, (Note: Hugh and Sarah ended up in Guernsey Co., Ohio where they both died.)

The Names of Hugh Scott and Sarah McElwee Scott's children and in-laws.
Matthew Scott married Elizabeth Gill
Nancy Scott married James Scott
James Scott married Jane Hannah, Elizabeth Shaw and
Eliza Dickerson
Thomas Scott married Nancy McCoy
Rebecca Scott married Richard Coen
Jane Scott married John Barnum
Susan Scott married George Shaffer
Katherine Scott married Jacob Downy
Sarah Scott married Abraham Asher
William Scott- if married do not know to whom
Margaret Scott - if married do not know to whom
Mary Scott married Thomas Downy
Elizabeth Scott-died young

Note: William Scott married Elizabeth Nelson and Margaret Scott never married.
From other records it looks like Hugh and Sarah McElwee Scott camr to America in 1795 and lived in Philadelphia, Pa. when their first son, Matthew was killed at age two. They then named their next son, a boy, Matthew.

You can read her story about her parents Thomas and Nancy
McCoy Scott on their memorial pages.
