Dooley, not only taught, but also was a renowned Silversmith at Intermountain School in Brigham City, Utah, for 25 years.
He was also one of the WWII U.S.M.C. Navajo Code Talkers. He helped train a team of marines who used a code based on the Navajo language to confuse the Japanese military. There were approximately 400 Navajo Code Talkers and they worked extremely well. In the first 48 hours of the battle of Iwo Jima, Navajos sent or received 800 messages without an error. The code was considered so valuable that it was classified until 1968.
In 1977, seventeen Navajo Code Talkers were invited to Washington, D.C., to attend the Inauguration of President-Elect Jimmy Carter on January 20th. The Arizona delegation left on January 19th. Delegates who attended were: Signey Bedoni, George Kirk, King Mike, Dean Wilson, Joe Kellwood, Carl Gorman, James Nakai, Harold Foster, Keith Little, Albert Smith, Eugene Crawford, Frank Thompson, Paul Blatchford, Henry Belone, William Cadman, Martin Link and J. Goodluck.
In 1982, President Reagan designated August 14th as Navajo Code Talkers Day. In 2000, the United States Senate adopted a proposal by Senator Jeff Bingaman (Democrat of New Mexico) to honor the Navajo Code Talkers with medals -- a gold medal for the first 29 Marines to join and a silver medal for about 370 others. Dooley died on June 4, 2000 in Albuquerque, NM. He was 89 years old.
The movie "WindTalkers" (released June 2002) starring Nicholas Cage, Adam Beach and Roger Willie portrayed the heroic deeds of the Navajo Code Talkers.
My father is Navajo Code Talker, Joe H. Kellwood. It is with great admiration and respect that I acknowledge the life of Dooley Shorty.
