Dr. Schmitz was the son of Melvin & Naomi Schmitz. He graduated from Mendota High School in 1959 after which he served in the U.S. Army until he was honorably discharged in 1965. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University & continued his education, graduating from Washington University School of Dentistry in 1970. On August 10, 1968 he married his beloved wife Barbara Bugele.

He began practicing dentistry as an associate in Oshkosh Wisconsin in 1970. In 1973, he began his solo practice & later built his own office, which was completed in Oshkosh in 1980.

Dr. Schmitz' first love was flying. He was a member of the local EAA Chapter 152, Flying Dentists Association & a former member of the Fox Valley Aero Club. He was also active in many other clubs & organizations. He was a member of the American Dental Association & the Winnebago Dental Association. Dr. Schmitz was aslo a volunteer at the Tri-County Dental Clinic.

He enjoyed Tuesday night stock car races followed by a good pizza at "Players" in Oshkosh with his buddies. He also loved to water ski , ride his motorcycles & travel. He died form injuries sustained when he was struck by an oncoming car while he was riding his motorcyle, while driving back home after the long weekend, in Illinois on May 29, 2005. He was only 63 years old.

He was survived by his wife Barbara & two sons, Barney & Arlan Schmitz, his mother Naomi Schmitz Blanton, sisters Gwen & Wanda, and many other friends & relatives.

He also is survived by his loving & dedicated staff at his dental office.

*A personal note. Dr. Schmitz, was one of the nicest men (outside of my dad, of course) that I have had the pleasure to meet in my lifetime. In Denistry, he was a genius. I personally don't think there is anything that he couldn't "make work". He was always willing to "Go the extra mile" for his patients, and I always received a Christmas Card from him & his Office Staff at Christmas. No other Dentist that I've ever gone to has ever done that. It was an honor to have known him.
