Son of Benjamin Fessenden and Lavina Stevens. A cooper by trade. He founded in 1859 the firm of Walter Fessenden & Son which became the leading manufacturing firm in Townsend in the late 19th century, employing 60 to 80 men in the manufacture of barrels and cooper's stock of all kinds. He was one of the most influential men in securing the state charter for The Townsend Bank, which he served as President from its founding in 1854 until his death in 1884. In 1865 it became a national bank. He served as Townsend Postmaster from 1846 to 1849. He was a member of the Massachusetts Delegation to the 1856 and 1860 Democratic National Conventions. In 1861 he was chosen a member of the Massachusetts Senate.
