He was the son of Adam & Mary Beamgaurd. During the Civil War he enlisted on 11/28/1862 at Columbia SC, in the 18th SC Infantry Co. G. He was wounded at Clay's Farm VA. on 5/20/1864, in the calf of his leg. He also appeared on a list of casualties of the 18th SC Regiment, Co. G, at Petersburg VA, appearing in the Yorkville Enquirer 4-5-1865, - J.C. Beamguard, wounded in the abdomen, severe. He was captured at Amelia Court House, VA, on 4/3/1865 and sent to City Point VA., made a prisoner of war, spending time at Point Look Out Prison MD. He took his oath of allegianceon 6/24/1865. His oath gives his appearance as 5'10"", Blue Eyes, Reddish Hair, Dark Complexion." He was released June 1865 and returned home to York County SC. He married Phoebre Jane Robinson
