Son of Elisha Herrick and Samantha Martin.

He prepared for college at West Randolph, Vermont Academy; he left Dartmouth College at the end of his sophomore year and then graduated from the University of Vermont in 1856. For two years 1856-58, he was the principal of Bradford Academy, and one year of West Randolph Vermont Academy. In 1859 he entered Andover Theological Seminary and left in the spring of 1862 to serve as principle of Lincoln, Massachusetts High School. On 3 Sep 1862 he enlisted in Company C, 15th Vermont Volunteers. On 11 Sep 1862 he was promoted to 2nd Lt., on 9 Jan 1863 he was promoted to 1st Lt and served until the Company was mustered out on 5 Aug 1863, serving mainly in defense of Washington, and the first day of the battle of Gettysburg.

In Aug 1863 he began to serve as Pastor of Congregation Church at Rochester Vermont, until 1866, at Colchester Vermont until Jan 1869, and at Wilmington Vermont from May 1869 for one year, after which at Chelsea Vermont for 19 years, from the spring of 1889 to May 1911 he Pastored at Milton Vermont where he then retired. He was said to be a forceful Preacher, a faithful, sympathetic pastor and possessed many traits which endeared him to people. He had a pronounced poetic gift, and wrote poems for Chelsea, Vermont's Centennial in 1884, and Chelsea's old home week in 1901, as well as many in newspapers and magazines.
