Albert "AL" Fuchs, of Madison, Wisconsin, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. Born in the Town of Spring Grove, near Juda, in Green County, Wisconsin, on December 9, 1927, Al was the youngest child of Swiss immigrants Wilhelm Fuchs and Babetta (Trumpi) Fuchs.

While still a child, his family moved to Rock County, first to the Town of Magnolia, and then to Evansville, Wisconsin, where Al lived most of his life. In 1945, at age seventeen, Al volunteered for the United States Navy and served in the Pacific, where he worked on a subtender.

Al married Constance Jean Hallmark on February 3, 1950, in Evansville, where together they raised their family. Connie and Al were constant and devoted companions for 53 years, until Connie's death in 2003.

Al was a welder by trade. He worked at Janesville Sand and Gravel, but spent most of his career at Varco Pruden, a metal building company in Evansville, where, late in his career, he did maintenance work, as well. Following retirement, Al and Connie moved to Janesville, Wisconsin. Always hardworking, Al then returned to work at Stoughton Trailers.

Al was a creative and talented craftsman who had the ability to plan, design, and fabricate his own projects. He built his own wood stoves, wood splitters, and did home renovation. He was also a good mechanic.

Al had a particular talent for fixing things, and could often be found helping relatives, neighbors, and friends in need. Al truly enjoyed helping others, and was happy to be of use.

Al liked the outdoors and enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, boating, and camping. He was also an avid and excellent bowler, well into his eighties. Al did a lot of walking for exercise; he loved to dance, especially the polka. He also enjoyed singing old German folksongs.

Al and his wife were well traveled, enjoying many trips together throughout the United States. And in 1999, Al was able to fulfill Connie's lifelong dream of touring Europe.

Al was a friend to animals. He was devoted to family labrador dogs, Homer, and then Luke, as well as his last pet, Muffin, a rabbit ‘inherited' from his granddaughters.

Al was always in good spirits. He was well liked wherever he went and always brought his bright shining smile. He was a gentle man and always a gentleman.

Besides his wife and his parents, Al was preceded in death by son David A. Fuchs, and siblings Wilhelm "Bill" Fuchs, Walter Fuchs, Mary Schneider, John Fuchs, Emma Merrill Hansen Poffenberger, and Victor Fuchs.

Interment was on Thursday, May 30, 2013, in Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville, Rock County, Wisconsin.

Al, you were a good Dad, husband, and friend, and you are missed.

Special thanks to Bill Brotzman and all of Al's Wynwood family for making Al feel so cared about. And Bill, you are right, we will all miss this kind Swiss man.
