Edward D. Oswald, age 88, of 1817 Maple Street, Manitowoc passed away on Thursday morning, May 23, 2013 at his residence.
Ed was born on March 28, 1925 in Reifs Mills, Wisconsin, son of the late George and Anna (Naidl) Oswald. The family moved to Manitowoc in 1928. Ed attended Jefferson School, St Andrews Catholic School and Washington Junior High School. He graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School with the class of 1942. Ed was married on July 10, 1948 at St. Andrews Church in Manitowoc to the former Kathryn L. Stiefvater. They had five sons and one daughter, Alan, Steven, Randal, Edward Jr., Anne and John. Ed and his wife Kathryn loved traveling, having made numerous trips to Europe, particularly to Germany and Czechoslovakia. He was also an avid golfer. Among his many memories was a golf trip to Scotland during which he was proud to tell everyone he could that he was there golfing with his five sons. He and Kathryn spent many summers vacationing in Eagle River. He enjoyed these trips the most when children and grandchildren were able to spend time with them there. He was also a lifelong Cubs fan having attended one of their last games in a World Series in 1945. He kept hoping that maybe this would be the year. But probably his greatest passion was for the family traditions he and Kathryn started, particularly those at Christmas. The entire family waited every year in anticipation to see the handcrafted, wooden Christmas ornaments that he would make for each family member. His attention to detail and craftsmanship were amazing.
Ed was employed at the Koutnik and Schwartz Shoe Store until graduation from High School. He then was employed by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company during the submarine program as a beginning shipfitter until early 1944. Ed moved to Bremerton, Washington and was employed by Puget Sound Navy yards as a shipfitter and welder until the end of WWII in August of 1945. He returned to Manitowoc and worked for the Kelvinator Corporation for a short period of time. He then attended the Manitowoc Business College where he graduated with an accounting degree after which he worked as an accountant for the Aluminum Specialty Company until March of 1949. He then became Manager of Insulation and Supply Company in Manitowoc. He and his wife purchased the company in October of 1957 and purchased the former Kellner Feed Store, remodeled it and moved to that location. After several remodels and additions he sold the property at 402 N. 9th Street and built a new 51,000 square foot distribution warehouse and office at 1129 S. 41st Street in Manitowoc which is part of the Manitowoc Industrial Park. He further expanded these operations in Appleton and Green Bay, Wisconsin with new warehouses and office buildings. These three operations are partly owned and managed by two of their sons, Alan and Steven Oswald. The company is now in its 56th year of operation under his ownership.
Ed was a member and past president of the Manitowoc Noon Optimist Club. He was one of the founders of the Roncalli High School Athletic Association and Past President of the Roncalli High School Board. Ed was a 50 plus year member of the Manitowoc Elks Lodge 687 and was also a trustee for five years. He was a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus. Ed was a member of the former Holy Innocents Catholic Church on Waldo Boulevard since 1949 and currently St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Manitowoc.
