JUDGE W. E. MCNAIR SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK SAT. NIGHT
W. Emmett McNair, 57, probate judge of Bullock County, died suddenly at his home in this city, at nine o’clock Saturday night, from a heart attack.
Judge McNair was serving his first term as probate judge, having been elected in 1934, for a six-year term, beginning January, 1935. He served as chief clerk of the probate office for about 10 years prior to his election. He was born and reared near Inverness, in this county, and conducted a mercantile business there for several years, before moving to Union Springs in 1925 to take a position with the Moseley Gin Co. He also served as a member of the Bullock County School Board for several years.
Judge McNair was one of the most accommodating public officials we have ever had to serve our county. He possessed a genial nature and many fine qualities which drew many to him in warm friendships.
In addition to his office as probate judge, Mr. McNair served as vice-president of the Alabama-Florida Baseball League, and as president of the Union Springs Club. He was active in civic and church affairs, being a member of the Union Springs Exchange Club, and an elder of the Presbyterian church.
Surviving are his widow, who before her marriage was Miss Linda Cope, and six children, Cecil McNair, principal of the Union Springs High School; Harold and Woodrow McNair of Union Springs, Winton McNair of Montgomery; Miss Claire McNair, Union Springs and Mrs. J. S. Pruett, of Midway.
Funeral services were conducted from the residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, being conducted by Rev. Stanford Panell [sic] [Parnell] , of the Presbyterian church. A choir composed of Mrs. Henry McCorkle, Miss Anna McKay, Messrs J. M. McKay, and H. C. Harris, and Mrs. D. W. Parker, accompanist, sang several numbers. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, with the following officials of the Presbyterian church as pall bearers: E. J. Pierce, W. M. Moore, W. D. Simpson, F. E. Wilson, M. P. cade, and C. D. Norman.
Members of the Union Springs Baseball Club attended in a body and assisted with the beautiful floral tributes.
