Absalom Woodward Montgomery was born in South Bend, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania in 1874--the son of Alexander J. Montgomery (and Mary Ballentine), grandson of Anthony W. Montgomery (and Jane Woodward), and great-grandson of Absalom Woodward (and Isabella Carothers of Cumberland County). The Woodward family originated the cemetery. It is not far from the property (gifted to Woodward's daughter Jane and son-in-law)on which stood what used to be Anthony W. Montgomery's house (and still stood there the last time I visited the area). Absalom Woodward and his wife Isabella are buried in the Woodward/Montgomery/Wausson Hill cemetery. b When I last visited the cemetery, Isabella's horizontal gravestone had become broken and was propped up against one of the slabs on which it had originally rested. To the right of Isabella's stone, there is a slab of the same size, lying face down, which might very well belong to Absalom Woodward, overturned by age or (more likely) vandalism. All of the above Montgomerys (and more) are buried in this cemetery. Absalom Woodward Montgomery, the subject of this biography does not have a gravestone. (He died just after the depression; and the family, unable to spare the funds for a stone, never got around to doing it subsequently.) His family also had a city home in Allegheny City (now the "North Side" of Pittsburgh), and Bab is reported to have attended the Western University of Pennsylvania (now the University of Pittsburh). He was an athlete who played on a Pittsburgh amateur baseball team and was a charter member (and sometime golf champion) of the Pittsburgh Field Club. He is also said to have been an amateur boxing light heavyweight champion (not sure how extensive a region-probably Western Pennsyslvania or Pennsylvania). Most of his working career was spent with Westinghouse Electric; and he and his wife and children lived in Aspinwall, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. He was married to Clara Louessa Hoffman and had two sons--Charles Woodward Montgomery, who attended Penn State and the University of California at Berkeley and then worked in research for the Gulf Oil Corporation. By retirement he had been named Chief Scientist for the Corporation. He married June Torell Lepley, had an adopted stepdaughter, Diana Walton (Lepley) Montgomery and lived in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Bab's other son was Allen Marshall Montgomery, who married Dorothy Millar, lived near Cleveland, worked in research for Alcoa, and had a daughter Elizabeth and son Richard. Richard married his step-cousin Diana and lived in Pittsburgh. Before their divorce, Richard and Diana had two sons--Ian Bruce Montgomery, now living in New York City, and Patrick Woodward Montgomery, living near Boston. Ian's children are Anna Elizabeth Alexandra Montgomery and Charles Blystone Woodward Montgomery. Patrick's children are William Styles Woodward Montgomery and Skyler Polley Montgomery. Richard now lives in New Jersey, and Diana in Pittsburgh.
