Mr. Maurice M. Sr., 87, of Regency Park, Dalton, Ga. died November 21, 2000.

Mr. Sponcler was a lifelong resident of Newnan, Ga., having moved to Dalton in 1997.

A funeral will be 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan with Dr. Joel E. Richardson officiating. The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

Mr. Sponcler was born July 11, 1913, in Newnan, son of George Maurice and Ruth Moncrief Arnall Sponcler and was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Moore Sponcler. He was a graduate of Newnan High School and attended Georgia Tech where he graduaged in 1934 and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. He served in the United States ARmy in World War II.

For more than 30 years Mr. Sponcler was an executive with Arnall and Arnco Mills. He was chief executive officer for the two years before the mills were sold to Bibb Manufacturing Company, and he worked for five years as Assistant Director of Operations before his retirement.

An active member of his community, Mr. Sponcler served on the Newnan Board of Education for many years, was a member of the Newnan Rotary Club for 10 years and was associated with the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks. Being a devoted member of Central Baptist Church of Newnan, he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.

Mr. Sponcler is survived by his daughter, Schy Funderburk and her husband Blair of Snellville, Ga. and a son, Maurice Sponcler Jr. and his wife Betty of Dalton, Ga.; grandchildren, Rob Funderburk of Charlotte, N.C., Katie Funderburk of Birmingham, Ala., Dr. Lisa Sponcler Norman of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Dori Sponcler of Atlanta; sisters, Mrs.Katie Hollis and Mrs. Lucy Colvin of Newnan; seven nieces.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Sponcler's memory to Whitfield Health Care Inc. or to the Central Baptist Church of Newnan.
