The first young man of the Allison community to give his life for his country in WWII was Carl Hoodjer, 26, son of Joh and Dena Hoodjer. Mrs. Hoodjer resides five miles east of Allison. Word of the death of the popular young farmer was received by his mother Monday night by telegram from the war department, the Secretary of War expressing his deep regrets.
Carl was one of two os Mrs. Hoodjer's sons who were serving their country in the Army. Carl was with the infantry in New Guinea. The other is Clarence Hoodjer, who is stationed at Camp White in Medford, Oregon.
Carl had been in the service since Dec. 1941. He received his early training in a California camp before being sent to Australia on April 1, 1942. He had been in New Guinea since Sept. 1.
Carl was born on the farm east of Allison Nov. 6, 1916. His father died in 1940. Carl graduated from Clarksville High School and was engaged in farming until he was called into service.
Besides his mother, his siblings are: John Hoodjer, Jr.; Paul Hoodjer, Clarence Hoodjer (also in the service), Henry Hoodjer and Louis Hoodjer, and his sister, Mrs. Harm Poppen; and his grandmother, Mrs. Anna Henrichs of Allison. Rev. W. C. Nassen, pastor of St. Jacobus Lutheran Church of Allison confirmed the young man in the church when he was 15 years old, and said that memorial service would be held later.
