Verlyn L. Almond, age 89, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Becker-Shoop Hospice with his loving family at his side. He was born in Hand County, South Dakota to Lloyd and Myrtle Almond on September 10, 1923. They moved to Racine when he was three months old and lived the rest of his life in Racine.

Verlyn proudly served his country being a Navy man in World War II. He served on the U.S.S. 737 Sub-Chaser. After returing from service he met the love of his life Mildred Foreman. They were married at Bethania Methodist Church on October 5, 1947. Verlyn was an accomplished finish carpenter and built three beautiful homes for his family in the Racine area. He was employed by Haisler Builders and Bukacek Construction until his retirement. He enjoyed helping the community by being a volunteer on the Racine Fire Bells for many years with his cousin Paul Smith. Verlyn was a wonderful family man, loving husband, grandfather, and great grandfather. Verlyn was an animal lover and was always happy having a pet around along with all the kids. They all spent many enjoyable summers at their cottage in Mauston, Wisconsin.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-six years, Millie; son, Gary Almond; granddaughter, April (Byron) McIntosh, and grandson, Christopher (Trish Rice) Almond. He is also survived by his brother, Kenneth (Sandy) Almond and sister, Carol Almond Hodges, both of Arizona. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Drew, Courtney, Allyssa, and Braden McIntosh, many dear nieces and nephews, special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harold and Shirley Schimek and Howard and Delores Foreman. He was preceded in death by his greatest loss, two grown sons Gene and Greg. In addition he was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Myrtle Almond; his in-laws, Howard and Margaret Foreman; brother-in-law, Paul Hodges and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Norm and Fran Trudeau.

A very special thank you to neighbors and friends, Rosie Domanico and Sonny Havn, hospice caregivers, aids and nurses at Becker-Shoop, who gave Verlyn loving and compassionate care as he gave his love back to them. Also thank you to Dr. Zablotney and Cathy.
