Caleb graduated 1845 from Virginia Military Institute, studied law under Judge Edward S Duncan, admitted to bar in Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1847, as a delegate from Lewis county, he walked out of the 1861 Secession Convention with other Union supporters.
