Mr George Herbert Coles, of Albany, who was, awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for gallantry at sea last March, has died abroad of pneumonia following exposure, according to a cable message received by his father. Cpl S. T. Coles. AAMC, yesterday. When his ship was torpedoed in the Atlantic off the east coast of America last year --the third ship to be torpedoed under him in 11 months-Mr Coles reboarded the ship with the captain and helped to bring it to port. Mr Coles was also given a bonus by the owners of the vessel. He was believed to be the first West Australian member of the Merchant Navy to win the BEM in this war.
COLES (George Herbert, B.E.M)—Died on January 30, 1943, of pneumonia, in U.S.A., whilst serving with the M.V. "Imperial Transport," aged 25 years.
