ROBERT WEST, SR., DEAD
HE WAS GRAND SCRIBE OF ALABAMA ODD FELLOWS

An Aged Citizen of Montgomery of Wide Acquaintance and Large Family Passes From Earthly Scenes.

Robert West, Sr., Grand Scribe Independent Order Odd Fellows of Alabama and for twenty-five years a citizen of Montgomery, died of pneumonia at 2:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home five miles from the city on the Washington Ferry road. Mr. West had been in declining health for some time but the illness which caused his death dated back only three days and his death was therefore a shock to his family and his wide circle of friends.
Mr. West was one of Montgomery's best known and most highly respected citizens. He was possessed of a happy disposition and a bright mind, and he had gathered about him a large circle of acquaintances and friends who were devoted to him.
At the time of his death Mr. West was in the 70th year. He was born in Lewisburg, Tenn. During his twenty-five years' residence in Montgomery he had occupied various prominent positions in the mechanical field. For many years he was Chief Engineer at the plant of the Montgomery Fertilizer Works and was later the engineer in charge of the water works plant of the city. Since then he had been associated with his son in the electrical business.
Mr. West had been Grand Scribe of the Independent Order Odd Fellows of Alabama for several years. He had been a member of this order for a number of years and it is expected that the local members will attend his funeral in a body.
A devout and consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Mr. West was devoted to its interests and was one of the prime movers in the organization of a congregation in Montgomery and the building of a house of worship.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, J. H. West, Jr., of Montgomery, five daughters, Mrs. J. D. Roquemore, Mrs. William Hall and Mrs. E. E. Langham of Montgomery, Mrs. E. C. Crenshaw of Georgiana and Mrs. C. F. Davis of Hartford, two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Riley of Montgomery, another sister in Tennessee, and a number of grand children.
Throughout his long residence in Montgomery Mr. West had enjoyed the confidence and respect of his neighbors. In his years of good health he was an indefatigable worker. Of frugal habits and conservative business judgement he amassed a competence and reared a large family of sons and daughters who are prominently identified with the social and business life of the city.
The body of Mr. West Will be brought to the city this morning and will lie at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Langham, 68 Amanda Street, until tomorrow morning, when the funeral will take place at 10:30 o'clock at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Robert was born September 1835, about a year before his mother Dovey Hughes West died (August 1836). The earliest census I can find with his name is 1860, when is age is recorded as 15 years old. Since he was still at home with his father and his siblings, I think they would have known the correct year. He was one year younger than his stepbrother, and the last child born to his parents.
