Ethlyn Sarah White Agnew, of Alamogordo, passed away May 13, 2009, in the home of her daughter, Jennifer, in Birmingham, Ala., where she had been lovingly cared for over the past several months.
She was born in Fort Stanton on Nov. 3, 1930, to the late Edward and Ethel (Thompson) White. Ethlyn attended grade school in Fort Stanton, graduated from high school in Capitan, and attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. She was married 44 years to the late Glenn C. "Jake" Agnew. They were married in a double wedding ceremony with their close friends, Mary Glenda (Shook) and Ted Bonnell on Sept. 11, 1949, in Ruidoso.
While a child, she played violin and piano, and continued to enjoy piano into adulthood. As a young woman, she was Sun Princess in the Sun Bowl Parade in El Paso, and Regimental Sweetheart at New Mexico Military Institute. Ethlyn supported her children and their activities as a homeroom mother at Sierra Elementary School as long as she had children there. Ethlyn made beautiful clothes for her daughters for every special occasion. She and her husband, Jake, enjoyed square dancing for many years as a family activity. She made many matching square dance outfits for the entire family. She loved to travel, and she and Jake enjoyed traveling around with their camper as members of the Good Sam RV Club. They were also members of the Elk's Club.
She enjoyed music, especially piano. She loved listening to Elvis Presley's songs. She especially had a soft spot for animals and loved her dogs, Ruby and Minnie, until the day she died.
Ethlyn was one of the first volunteers at Betty Dare Good Samaritan Center as a member of the Sunshine Auxiliary. She worked many years as a volunteer at the St. John's Soup Kitchen. As an excellent cook, she was also known for her generosity, always having room for one more at the table at home and often took in hungry or needy guests.
Ethlyn was very interested in all the activities involving her childhood home at Fort Stanton.
Ethlyn was preceded in death by her husband, Jake; her parents and a brother, Willett White.
She is survived by her children, Esther Baker and her husband, Ed, of La Luz, Jennifer Young and her husband, Bill, of Birmingham, Ala., Ron Agnew and his wife, Melanie, of Albuquerque, and Steve Agnew and his wife, Ramona, of Alamogordo; grandchildren Trey Way, Jennifer Pethick, Jessie, Krista, Jenna and Desiree Baker, Cari Sides, Brandon Jones, John and Beth Young, Alexandra Van Laer, David Luna and Nicole Sierra; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; godchildren, Edward and David White; two brothers, George White and his wife, Lucy, of Glendale, Ariz., and Jere and his wife, Kay, of Tucson, Ariz.; and sisters-in-law Jo White of San Antonio, Texas, and Mary Work and Genie Wade, of Alamogordo.
A memorial service for Ethlyn will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009, at the Alamogordo Funeral Home chapel.
