"Sp/4 Richard C. Alexander, 20, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1970 in Vietnam of injuries received there August 30 when he was struck by a military vehicle according to word received late Monday night by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pressley R. Alexander of RD 1, Clarion.
A representative of the Army from Mercer notified them of the death of their son by delivering a telegram which stated in part, that he died as a "result of the injuries previously reported to you."
The first telegram from the Secretary of the Army stated that he had received crushing injuries to his chest and abdomen, the right lobe of the liver and fractures of eight ribs. A second telegram received early last week reported that he was still in critical condition with morale good and progress fair. The Alexander's were told Monday they would be contacted by someone from the Indiantown Gap Military Reservation within 24 to 72 hours with more information and further details.
A 1968 graduate of Clarion – Limestone High School, Alexander entered the service in May of last year. He had worked for a year at the Owens – Illinois Glass Company at Brockport, N. Y. before entering the service.
After completing basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., he served a six month's tour of duty in Germany. Following a 45 day leave at home this summer, he was sent to Ft. Lewis, Wash. and then to Vietnam. He had only been there about six weeks when he was injured and had written home about serving on a barge transporting Army equipment.
Born August 9, 1950 in Clarion, he was a son of Pressley and Mary Glinkerman Alexander. Surviving along with his parents, are three brothers, Roy, David and John at home; a sister, Brenda at home, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Myrtle Glinkerman of Summerville. A sister, Catherine Jane, died in 1966. The Robert V. Burns Funeral Home in Clarion will be in charge of funeral arrangements to be announced pending the arrival of the body from overseas."
