On December 2, 1948 he enlisted in the USMC and was stationed at various camps in California, Korea, Japan, Okinawa, Vietnam and Florida. Wayne was wounded by a mortar in August 1950 in Korea and returned to his unit as they came out of Battle of Chosin Reservoir, in December 1950. On October 1955, Wayne married Phyllis Wallen of Mehama and they were blessed with three sons, Craig in 1956, and twins Robert and Rodney in 1959.
Wayne served in various capacities with the Marines, from MP on the Main Gate at Camp Pendleton to Anti-Tank and Recon units. Wayne served two tours in the Vietnam War with the 1st Recon unit and completed his final two years in Jacksonville, FL serving the Fleet Intel Center, Europe, and retired with honor from the Marines on August 31, 1968.
After retiring from the USMC, Wayne served as an elementary school custodian in 1968 and joined the Oceanside Transit Company (which later became North County Transit District) in September, 1969. Wayne filled a number of different roles during his 23 years with the District, serving as a Driver, Dispatcher and Supervisor / Superintendent. After retiring, in 1994, Wayne worked for various car dealerships delivering cars and trucks.
In February 1999 Phyllis died and later that year Wayne married Valerie, who he had known in High School, and moved back to Oregon in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Valerie; his son Craig and his wife Elizabeth of Klamath Falls, OR; his son Robert and his wife Terry of Fallbrook, CA, and his son Rodney and his wife Maureen of Escondido, CA. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren: Michelle Andersen, Janelle Chitwood, Noelle VanLeuven, Ryan O'Farrell, Lacey Sharp and Jaclyn O'Farrell. There are 8 great grandchildren. One brother, Kenneth, preceded him in death. He is also survived by a large extended family and many beloved friends. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
