Laban Rhyne Kelly Jr., 90, of Lake Lure, went home to be with his Savior on Monday, December 26, 2016. Laban was born June 23, 1926 in Charlotte to Laban R. Kelly Sr and Celeste Hood Kelly. He was a WWII US Army veteran.Laban, Jr. was in Italy during WWII. The Army would not let him come home for the funeral when his father died. He was discharged on December 8th, 1945.
He married Martha V. Eller on May 11, 1946, and they were married 54 years, until her death in 2000. They had 5 children, Martie, Rhea, Leah, Bonnie and Butch. He and Martha also had 15 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Laban is also survived by a brother Dick and sister Joan. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his daughter Leah Hempfling and brother, Reid. A service to honor Laban's life will be held 1PM Friday, December 30, 2016 at Chimney Rock Baptist Church cemetery, 270 Boys Camp Road, Lake Lure, NC.
