Richard D. 'Boomer' Allen

Longtime Sterling resident Richard D. "Boomer" Allen died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a short battle with cancer. He was 72. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring in Sterling.

Mr. Allen was born April 4, 1933, in West Branch, Mich. He moved to Reed City, Mich., at age 9, with his brothers, sisters and parents, R.Z. and Esther Allen. He graduated from Reed City High School in 1951 and served in the U.S. Navy until 1955. He married Cherril Whitman in December 1953 in Reed City. After returning to Reed City, he worked many years at Miller Industries.

In 1970, the couple, moved their family to Alaska, where he worked for the Kenai Peninsula School District, Kenai Supply and Spenard Builders Supply Inc., which he retired from.

He enjoyed everything Alaska had to offer. He flew his own plane, built his home with the help of his sons and wife, enjoyed fishing and hunting and sharing it with his family and shared many tales of his experiences with bear, moose, deer and fish.

"Richard believed in loving God with all your heart, soul, body and strength and loving your neighbor as your self. He proved this many times over by lending a helping hand whenever anyone needed one. He helped many people over the years by building things for them, helping them build — or whatever their need might have been. He was a true Christian, as well as loving husband and father. He will be dearly missed," his family said.

Mr. Allen is preceded in death by his mother, Esther Allen; and son, Danny Allen. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cherril; daughter and son-in-law, Shawn and Ken Robertson of Sterling; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Bonnie of Soldotna; father, R.Z. Allen of Alma, Mich.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Thomas Allen of Sacramento, Calif., and Perry Allen of Reed City, and their wives; sisters; Betty Wamser of Rockford, Mich., Peggy Titus of Atlanta and Joyce Apsey of Reed City; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
