By 1900, the Mathews had daughters Perla Killiam, Carrie Killiam, and Fannie, all b. in Delaware, and a son Austin D. Mathews, b. in New York.
His death by pneumonia is documented as 3 Feb 1901 in the City of Philadelphia, where he was a mechanical engineer, buried 7 Feb 1901 in Worcester, MA.
His widow, Phoebe S. Matthews, died 1 Apr 1933 in Kingston, Luzerne Co., PA, and was buried in Salem, NJ, according to her death certificate.
