Joshua Ackley's Obituary from the Leavenworth Times, November 1892,
Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas.

"Another old landmark is gone. Joshua Ackley, of Mount Olivet, aged 88 years, 4 months and 9 days. The deceased was born in Gloucester County, New Jersey, July 4, 1804, and died November 14, 1892, quietly at the home of his daughter Mrs. R. J. Mintier (Lucretia Ackley). When a child of nine years his parents died and left him an orphan, and was reared and educated by his elder brother Henry Ackley, of Pittsburgh, PA, and at the age of 23 years he moved to Youngstown, Ohio and there met and married Miss Asenath Cummins, and the result of the union was twelve children, seven girls and five boys; three girls and two boys died in infancy and the remaining seven were married. Mrs. Henrietta (Ackley) Cooley, of Mr. Olivet, died in 1865 and Henry Ackley of Winchester died in 1888. Those surviving are Mrs. R.J. Mintier (Lucretia Ackley) of Mt. Olivet, Mrs. P.H. Harlin of Tonganoxie, Mrs.Isaac Edwards of Valley Falls and J. W. and U. S. Ackley of Sedan, Kansas. He next moved to Terra Haute, Indiana, where he remained one year and a half. From there he moved to Kansas to try his fortunes in the then vast wilderness. He entered a claim in Leavenworth County, and remained here until his death. Funeral services were held at his late home by Reverend Hope of the U. B. Church, of Leavenworth, after which the remains were interned by the side of his wife (Asenath Cummins) in Mt. Olivet Cemetary, who passed away some 22 years ago. There were many floral offerings. Anchor and wreath, Miss Delphine Thieband, cross sickle, Miss Mina Thieband, bouquet and wreath, Miss Birdie Ackley (my Grandmother Sarah (Birdie) Louise Ackley, bouquet Mrs. Kroll, cut flowers, Mrs. Harmes. There Flowers were mostly Chrysanthemums, geraniums and roses. He was followed to the grave by his many friends and relatives and the Mt. Olivet school marched in procession to the cemetery led by their teacher A. C. Dubois."
