Ira W. Abernathy was the son of William Abernathy (born abt 1826 in North Carolina) and Martha Abernathy(born abt 1830 in North Carolina. He married Susan Payne (daughter of Thos. Payne Jr. and Catharine Payne) on March 25, 1869 in Alexander, North Carolina. Their known children are:

-Thomas Elbert Foy Abernathy 1870 - Apr. 4, 1931 died in North Carolina husband of Ella Abernathy.

-William Marsh Abernathy born in Alexander North Carolina Oct. 1, 1872 - Apr. 3, 1929 husband of Margret C. Abernathy buried in Liberty Cemetery in North Carolina on April 4, 1929.

-Martha Ann Abernathy born in Alexander North Carolina Feb. 4, 1877 - Jun 2, 1930 buried in Liberty Cemetery in North Carolina on Jun. 3, 1930
